Capturing the Magic of a Proposal in Cambridge: A Journey from 'Will You?' to 'I Do'

I'm lucky enough to meet all sorts of people at all stages of their lives, but one really lovely, fun and intimate role I love to do is to document a surprise proposal. When M decided to pop the question to K in a very special place in Cambridge, he chose to involve me in their very special day and below I show a little about the day.
The Spark of Inspiration
It began with M’s dream to propose to K in a romantic place, flying in from across the world back to where their relationship started. The park M chose was where they went on their first date, how romantic to come back to where it all began.
M approached me to see if I could capture their special moment. I'm always so careful when responding to these enquiries, choosing very deliberately neutral wording just in case their fiance to be spots the messages coming in on their phone, potentially ruining the surprise. I only ever reply/message after they have spoken to me on the assumption that they are likely in a private space for arranging the proposal.
Having established that I was available, we booked in a video call to talk plans. This is always so important as it's a very rare type of shoot where I don't get any input into positioning etc. until after the big moment. It's also good to talk about my flexible policy given it's quite possible their partner changes their mind about timings or weather is an issue or simillar things. In this case, there were a number of issues with various angles (children's play equipment, cars on road, rubbish bins etc.) so it was important we got our positions right. A few days before the big moment, I went down to the park and took a few phone snaps of the rough area so M and I could work out our plan.

Following some back and forth we found the spot handily demonstrated by these stick figures below!

The Day of the Proposal - Cambridge Proposal Photography
On the day itself, M shared his location with me so I followed the up from their hotel in London all the way walking across the city, this was so useful as it gave me plenty of time to get my kit ready and hidden in less obvious bags so I wouldn't give the game away when they arrived. I spent the next 25 minutes waiting, tracking them and working out my cover story activities for when they arrived in the park. In the time I was waiting, it was amusing how many small things happened that might have impacted the final image - about 4 different people sat down on the bench that had significance to them, a lady started defluffing her very fluffy white dog, leaving piles of dog hair all over the place, bags were left in my potential photo area, however as it turned out M picked the perfect spot and people moved, so the final image was empty apart from the spectacular park scenery and the beautiful couple themselves.
This beautiful Cambridge park was the background to their proposal and the start of the rest of their lives, here are some of the many photos I took to look like I had a reason to be loitering in that particular part of the park.
The Magical Moment
I found some long grass so got my phone out to look like I was creating content when I spotted them on the tracker near the park so as they walked in all they saw was me waving my phone in and out of the grass. We had a prearranged plan that M and K would walk around the park prior to the big moment. As they came round the first time, I got myself ready and nearly brought out the cameras before I spotted them going around for another circuit. I didn't track my heart rate, but at this point I was sure I'd been spotted and I bet my heart was racing ten to a dozen!
Finally they came round, put their bags down and M confidently guided K into the perfect spot for the photos. I was kneeling down at this point so able to whip the cameras out. What followed was the mostly lovely, long and loving proposal, I was too far away to hear anything that was said but the hugs and laughter and tears were just a joy to watch through my lens.
I always like to give everyone the time they need at this moment, so it was up to M to let K know I was there and call me over when they were ready.

Celebrating Love with Photography
Following the proposal, the couple enjoyed a mini photo session to celebrate their engagement. We grabbed some photos in the Cambridge park (and how gorgeous is the ring!!) then moved to the glorious tree avenue on Jesus Green along with M's family who were also in Cambridge that day.
Every click of the camera was more than just a picture; it became a memory of their very special day. They posed beneath beautiful ancient trees, their smiles reflecting the happiness they felt.

These images and my time with them showed me a promise of a beautiful future together, a testament to their shared love story.
Planning Your Surprise Proposal Photoshoot
If you feel inspired by M and K's journey, and are looking for a Cambridge proposal photography session, here are some practical tips for planning your own surprise proposal shoot:
Choose a Meaningful Location: Select a spot significant to your relationship. Consider where you've shared memorable moments together.
Talk to your Photographer: As you can't talk at the moment, it's good to have a pre proposal chat so you both know where you need to be.
Plan and be adaptable: Since your partner is unaware of the upcoming proposal, they might alter plans unexpectedly. Sharing locations was beneficial because M didn't need to constantly update me via text and he could see I was in position as well.. I could reassure them that I had plenty of time, even when the walk across Cambridge took longer than expected (apparently, there were many adorable cats to pet!). I'm always willing to discuss plans, conduct a brief site visit if necessary, etc., to ensure the moment is as stress-free as possible for the proposer.
Keep It a Secret: The surprise element is critical, so keep your plans under wraps to maintain the excitement. I always discuss with the proposer to make sure my routes/times of communication don't inadvertently ruin the surprise.
Consider ways to ensure your partner looks their best: They may not be aware they're about to participate in a photoshoot. In M's situation, he cleverly arranged to meet some people later in the day who coincidentally needed photos for a website. This way, K was aware she'd be photographed that day, just not by me! I always suggest to the partner who didn't know about my presence to take their time, contact family, do their hair, etc. Since they weren't expecting a photoshoot, I encourage them to relax, take a moment, and pause before starting the session with me.
Enjoy the Moment: Embrace and savor the joy of the occasion. It’s a moment you will cherish together forever!
