Celebrating 11 years of photography in Cambridge

Somehow it's already another year since my 10 year business anniversary and WOW has this year flown! I have, yet again, had so many experiences that would take all my fingers, toes and more to count. I really do appreciate that in my 11 years, all my clients have been lovely, beautiful and so much fun to work with. I am honoured that so many have taken the time to write lovely things about me.

One thing I love with a business that has run this long, is that I have many people I've worked with over a number of years. This Sunday's client was someone I met in 2018; Last Saturday's maternity client was someone I met nearly 3 years ago, and her child was the bump in their last photoshoot. I love meeting new people and working in new places, but it's always fun to see families grow, businesses evolve and getting the opportunity to document that change is a privilege.

Last year, when I was writing my 10 year celebration post, I thought about how I owned a well established business and still loved photography. It became clear to me a new challenge outside the business was really appealing, however, I really didn't want to stop my photography business - I love it too much!

Roll on the New Year and I was looking for part time work across Cambridge, when up popped an advert seeking a Charity Manager at the amazing Cambridge Curiosity and Imagination (CCI). In February I had a fantastic interview, which as a sign of things to come, included the wonderful question: "If you could share with us one photo of the world on your doorstep, what would you capture and why?" In the same way that I have a tendancy to overdeliver in my own business, my answer included two answers: my nieces, who live nearby and the cows on Midsummer Common. I really enjoyed the conversation that was my interview and was delighted when I was offered the position.

The interview had to be fitted around me working around a photoshoot, and my offer was also received just as I was going into another. This really showed how even from the very start this role would dovetail around my photography work. I am fully flexible so my day to day involves waking up and looking through CCI tasks and my own photography business and working through them as I need to.

I could probably go on endlessly about the wonderful work going on at CCI, which is aiming to inspire and give space to children to grow their creativity, imagination and inspiration. From the first few days of joining CCI, I have been welcomed by kindness, care and support, everyone I come across is passionate, inspiring and so wonderful. I am still working out the balance of the role, still learning and creating new systems but one thing is sure I'm loving every minute!

If you want to see what CCI do, we are currently planning to attend the "Come Outside" event in Arbury court on 24 July. Do come and see us and join us in creating some wonderful work.

Highlights from the last year

Here are some of my favourite photos from the past year. Click through to see more photos and the stories behind the images:

This was just simply magical - front row seats as a beautiful couple took their next steps to a forever of happiness!

The Pathways farm shoot came about from my CCI role, I was at an event as Charity Manager, when I met Geoff and heard his inspiring work, so I volunteered to work at his farm capturing imagery. I was a bit nervous of the goats eating my cameras though!

This was such a lovely small wedding, we had the ceremony at the Ascham Road - Cambridge Register Office, then into the City centre for some lovely photos of the couple and their wedding party. Really intimate and so much fun! I love a short wedding!

Other highlights include:

  • Photographing a colonoscopy - that was certainly new and something I won't forget!

  • Attending Duxford Airshow to photograph a lovely family

  • My first (and only so far) shoot with The Butterly Wishes Network

  • My first Nikkah at Cambridge Central Mosque (how has that taken 11 years for that!). Such a lovely ceremony and the colours of the outfits were so incredible. Really memorable and fun.

  • As always, my regular volunteering with Camcycle - including the Camcycle Cargo festival

  • Finding out there is a tunnel under the road at Emmanuel College and getting to walk through it whilst working with a client.

  • Photographing 100 students in one evening in a mammoth headshot session

  • Photographing a sausage dog in a Christmas jumper - one of a number of lovely jobs with The Crane Event.

  • This amazing wedding!

  • An amazing day in London with a pre wedding couple

  • The lovely Greater Cambridge Shared Planning Service - Youth Engagement Team. This was the client I happened to be working for when I was both interviewed for and offered the CCI post.

There are so many more that I can't mention them all!

Below is a gallery showcasing a selection of images from this year (and a few I didn't get round to sharing last year!). Thank you to my clients who have graciously allowed me to share their moments with you. I am truly thankful for their trust and generosity in letting me present their stories through my lens.

Roll on year 12!
